Tried to stay thematic with this one. It goes back and forth between some ultra classy cocktail dance jams and some tripper disco stuff...hence the title. I've kinda been on a kick with this stuff as of late. 95% of the time, moving forward is just about picking up on the right point in the past at the right time, right? It's crazy thinking about how every little piece of cultural detritus has a relative velocity within the context of a given time period...and how when the climate is right, certain bits suddenly become primed for a major reinsertion into the here and now...whip up some minor repackaging, attach it to a currently buzzing cultural beacon (a person, a scene,a venue, a movie, 3 seconds of a drumbreak, etc.) and then bam...threads of stagnant thought-energy are flowing through networks once again ...and things manifest...

That being said, I'm really hoping the lens shifts away from all this electro-noise and bratty indie rock and stuff like this finally blows up on the same level. With DFA and now Italians Do It Better getting a lot of press in America, I'm getting the feeling that this type of vibe could finally creep out from the realm of the elite record nerdus and into broader stretches of cooldom.

Also...I've sat on a little top albums 07 list for a month now and it keeps reminding me that it needs to go somewhere where eyes might chance upon it. I actually ended up compiling my 2006 one in Mid-March of last year like that was somehow remotely acceptable behavior...so yeah, this is an improvement actually, even though I didn't get around to posting it until now. Again, I'm the first to admit that I've never been doing this "the right way" in the first place. Lord knows I would love to just launch into all of that for like 3 pages as usual, but as far as I see it, all the backpedaling in the dark doesn't help either so fuck it...it is what it is...an attempt at defragmenting my internal world by filtering yours. Just know that I wouldn't bother if I didn't have all kinds of tastemaker creed. Anyway, on with it.

For the most part, I'd say 2007 fel like an extension of all the 2005 and in 2006. (edit:haha, wow...yeah, looks like I managed to sum it up better than I can ever thought possbile!!!) Basically, on the broader side of things, even more people know about Justice, Chromeo, MIA, LCD, Hot Chip, Diplo, and Animal Collective. My favorite trends were the 8-bit resurgence, stark minimal disco, and the street bass sound. I'm curious as to what's next. There's a push for early 90's type stuff but I feel it's too premature. There's a lot of forced early house stuff that still doesn't sound "hot" to me...however, incorporating the primitive drum machine styles from early chicago/detroit stuff IS really starting to catch my ear, after I've been fairly neutral to that sound all my life. The good stuff though like Kevin Saunderson or Mike Dunn; I'm hating on the La Bouche/Snap! sounding tracks. I'm still not a big fan of 8 minute long 303 workouts either, but if you layer that syncopation with something melodic and engaging then I'll bite. Then there's the 4X4 bassline stuff outta the uk...maybe that could catch on here more and bleed into other genres. And things could get interesting if mainstream rappers start doing their thing over 130 bpms rather than some dude on Ableton so we can get some official raverap. It's probably more likely that there's gonna be a lot more sampling of dance music for 80 bpms though. Anyway...speculating...but hopefully some kid who sayy, likes Modular, Tempa and Border Community in equal parts, finds some sort of seamless logical connection between them and keeps me stoked on new tunage for another 365.

Oh wait...like 330 at this point. Somewhere in there...boi-yoi-yoi-yoi-yoinggg...

Yeah, here are some of my favorite music videos of the year (that I didn't post at some point).

Liars go Mouth of Madness v Lost Highway in a deathrace for the disembodied. Directed by Patrick Daughters, who also directed all those dope one take Feist videos.

Black Dice with the meltiest mediascramble of the year. It's like someone made a TV Carnage vid outta those TV Carnage vids. Drain Bamage!

Cyriak is king shit of all things internet. He's responsible for a very significant portion of the animated gifs you see circulating the web. I'm pretty sure I've randomly posted some of his stuff before. His approach is fairly lo-fi, but completely legit because it's so awesome conceptually. You can tell he just churns this stuff out by himself too, like he's making a desperate attempt to keep up with his own mind. always a good look, imo.

Here's the video he did for what had to be the re-edit of the year. He manages to squeeze an entire world out of 5 seconds of old Frank Valli clips. Awesome. Someone needs to give this guy a studio with a budget.

Cross-cultural toobin' is a small passion of mine. Chinese auto-tune+power-up noises+magical glitter+lush space botanicals+Thing n'Co+eyeballs galore= yet more fantastical awesomeness of which I totally approve.

From even deeper in the interbutts.

So, back in the day, did you ever begin to think you could get this raw with yer Mario Paint? Naw, you probably drew a couple crude dicks, spent 5 minutes trying to make a song out of meow meows and tugboat noises, and then put that shit down forever because you thought "man, this game fucking sucks!"

Little did you know...it was YOU that was sucking all along...the least you could have done was like, suck as awesomely as these dudes.

Oh, and they're called Shit the Bed. I'm pretty sure they had that going for them before it became the hot phrase that it is. Double whammy.

more jokes...that last one reminded me of it...weezy and kanye made ridiculous, but definitely on point enough for it to really hit...too many retarded quotables to even list.

Alright, kinda got off topic. Back to real deal videos. I feel this one should have been made a long time ago, but maybe this x-ray camera deal is some sort of new technology? Regardless, it's utilized to great effect; this doesn't come off as gimmicky and it looks amazing.

Patrick Watson-The Great Escape.

this one does me in every time...
